About this book
The chapter on sound and music proposes an exposition of the properties and production of air vibrations that give rise to musical sensations. The explanation of resonance describes small impulses arriving at proper intervals of time and creating a large vibration in the body on which they act. The tuning-fork demonstration involves holding the fork above a tall jar and adding water until the sound becomes much louder.
The column of air has a natural rate of vibration, with a fundamental note whose wavelength is four times the length of the column. The discussion of thunder says that a storm about four miles away would produce a much shorter delay after lightning if the atmosphere were hydrogen.
