About this book
Douglas English's "Wee Tim'rous Beasties" is subtitled "Studies of Animal Life and Character." The title page calls him a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and author of "Photography for Naturalists," and describes this second edition as having one hundred and fifty illustrations from his photographs of living creatures.
One passage follows a small animal shut behind bars. It tests each bar, finds that only the third from the front moves, and gnaws at its socket while feeling a terrible thirst. In another, a Purple Emperor butterfly is held under a boy's straw hat lying across a flint, and gets away when the boy lifts the brim a hair's breadth. A further passage has a hedgehog asking what the caterpillars think, while a gudgeon and a troutling make straight for the weeds.
