About this book
What a Man Wills by Mrs. George de Horne Vaizey has a first chapter called At the Dying of the Year, which says that the New Year festivities were over and that in the hall of the old country Manor the guests had danced and sung. The members of the house-party settle by the log fire for a last chat, with eleven people left around the fire, counting the host and hostess, four men, and five girls.
Rupert's unexpected confession is called up in imagination as a strong, quiet tone speaking of his ideal love, the primal, overmastering affinity of mind for mind, soul for soul, body for body. Rupert Dempster is named as the one who had married a woman admittedly insane, and rumour said that she had to a great extent regained her reason. Francis gives vent to his jubilation by his wife's bedside and says triumphantly, “Now, I have everything I want.”
