About this book

Snow clings to Maria and Matilda's shoes when they return from a Sunday-school meeting to a warm room full of family work and conversation. Maria eagerly reports the formation of a Working Band, whose members promise to serve Christ. Matilda, called Tilly by her family, listens closely and asks what that promise means. Her careful habits and serious questions stand beside her sisters' chatter about clothes, bonnets and bedtime.

Susan Warner's children's novel treats Christian belief as a matter of everyday conduct. Discussions with Mr. Richmond connect prayer with patience, kind replies and speaking to others about faith. Matilda explains that she has joined the Band and considers reading about the life of Jesus with two other girls. The family exchanges give the religious teaching a domestic setting, offering readers a story about childhood conscience, shared study and the effort to turn convictions into action.
