About this book

Melbourne House, Volume 1 carries a verse on its title page: Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. A character named Daisy is described as having learned, without being untrue, to be very uncommunicative about her thoughts, plans, or wishes.

Daisy's mother says, Look at me, and tells Daisy she is not to go anywhere in future where Mr. Dinwiddie is. Daisy reminds Preston that he was going to teach her, and says she wants to learn everything but does not know much. Dr. Sandford says to Daisy that whatever concerns her concerns him, if it is the concern of nobody else, and asks whether she was tired of lying here so long, day after day.
