About this book
Whirlpools is a novel of modern Poland by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Gronski arrives at the Jastrzeb manor-house about midnight, where the young heir, Ladislaus Krzycki, awaits his guest. Gronski, with his hand on his ailing eyes, thinks that a girl has an honest heart and, if she only sees him, will forgive everything through compassion alone.
A funeral cortege moves between the poplars, and the Zarnowski tomb stands in the centre. The parish-priest of Rzeslewo did not live on good terms with the deceased, so he commends his soul to the divine mercy rather than praising him. The faces of the Zarnowski relatives are grave and appropriately grouped for the occasion, but show no grief, not a tear.
