About this book

A garden scene brings three figures dressed in black out of a green alley to a little fountain playing among the flowers. The eldest visitor is a woman who remains beautiful despite being the mother of many children. The Baron identifies the visitors as Frau von Ilmenau, her pale daughter Emma, and a Polish Count whom the Baron describes as always hovering about them.

Flemming says that the Count is already married and that his wife is young and beautiful. The narrator drinks a health to a hero whose heart holds sadness and whose ears hear the bells of Andernach ringing noon.

About the author

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - BDeBooks
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Longfellow was the most widely read poet in the English-speaking world in his own century and close to unread in the next, a fall worth explaining rather than simply repeating. He taught modern languages at Harvard, made the first American translation of Dante's Commedia, and wrote for a public that memorised verse as a matter of course.
