About this book
White House Gossip, by Edna M. Colman, runs from Andrew Johnson to Calvin Coolidge. A chapter is headed First Administration of Grover Cleveland and dated March 4, 1885, to March 4, 1889. The fourth of March, 1885, is described as dawning fair and warm, the finest weather ever known in the history of the city of Washington on Inauguration Day.
The President is quoted as writing that he is to be married on Wednesday evening at seven o'clock at the White House to Miss Folsom, and the text says he had conveyed to her his desire to lose a ward and gain a bride. Mr. Harding became ill and the circulation manager quit, and Mrs. Harding decided to take a hand in matters for a few days: she gathered some boys for carriers, installed a carrier system, started them out, and made them collect regularly. President Garfield and Secretary Blaine are placed at the Pennsylvania railroad depot, about to depart.
