About this book
Who Wrote the Bible?, A Book for the People, is by Washington Gladden. Chapter I, A Look Into the Hebrew Bible, says the aim of the volume is to put into compact and popular form, for the benefit of intelligent readers, the principal facts upon which scholars are now generally agreed concerning the literary history of the Bible. The same chapter says that the doctrines taught in the Bible will not be discussed and its claims to a supernatural origin will not be the principal matter of inquiry.
The contents list, among others, What Did Moses Write?, Sources of the Pentateuch, The Hebrew Prophecies and The Poetical Books. Chapter II, What Did Moses Write?, studies the first five books of the Bible, known as the Pentateuch, a word that is not in the Bible and is a Greek word signifying literally the Five-fold Work. The text says that this dogma of Biblical Infallibility was not clearly formulated and imposed upon the Protestant churches until the period succeeding the Reformation.
