About this book
William Sharp (Fiona Macleod) is subtitled A Memoir Compiled by His Wife Elizabeth A. Sharp. The preface says that when the secret of the identity of Fiona Macleod, so loyally guarded by a number of friends for twelve years, was finally made known, much speculation arose. The preface says many suggestions, wide of the mark, were advanced; among others, that the writer had assumed the pseudonym as a joke.
The memoir names the access to the University Library as the chief benefit of the subject’s undergraduate days. The memoir says the subject read omnivorously, night after night far into the morning hours, literature, philosophy, poetry, mysticism, occultism, magic, mythology, folk-lore. A first-person account tells of wandering from Haschisch-den to Haschisch-den and of going at last where not a single European was seen. The text says of some stories that “These stories are yours but they are not you”, adding that in a sense art is a wind above the small eddies of personality.
