About this book
Margaret Ogilvy is written by her son J. M. Barrie and dedicated to the memory of a sister, Jane Ann. A chapter headed How My Mother Got Her Soft Face tells of the day the writer was born, when six hair-bottomed chairs were bought, the first great victory in a woman's long campaign. The writer says all the clothes in the house were of her making, that she turned them and made them new again, and that never was a woman with such an eye for the fashion.
The writer remembers one ardent Gladstonian who, as a general election drew near, was in sore straits indeed, for he disbelieved in Home Rule. The text says that to leave her house had always been a month's work for her, since it must be left in such perfect order, every corner visited and cleaned out, every chest probed to the bottom.
