About this book
Within Prison Walls is a narrative of personal experience during a week of voluntary confinement in the State Prison at Auburn, New York, by Thomas Mott Osborne. The contents list names chapters called, among others, Why I Went to Prison, Sunday’s Journal and A Night In Hell. In an address, the speaker says he is chairman of the Commission on Prison Reform appointed by Governor Sulzer to examine into the Prison System of New York State.
Applause in the prison chapel is said to have always somewhat the character of an explosion, and hand-clapping is the only form permitted. A young prisoner washing windows asks the narrator if he would like some hot water, and the text calls him a good-looking lad, a Greek. Jack and all the other men about the narrator are described as most kind and solicitous for his comfort.
