Suki Kim’s memoir, “Without You, There Is No Us: My Time with the Sons of North Korea’s Elite,” is a chilling account of her time teaching English to North Korea’s elite youth during the final months of Kim Jong-il’s rule.

The book offers an unprecedented look into the lives of these privileged young men, who Kim describes as both “soldiers and slaves.” Amidst the eerie backdrop of students marching and singing praises to Kim Jong-il and North Korea, Kim finds herself slowly adapting to the rhythm. Her memoir provides a deeply moving and extraordinarily rare insight into life in the world’s most enigmatic country.
