About this book
Wood-Carving: Design and Workmanship is a handbook by George Jack. Its contents list chapters on the grain of the wood, imitation of natural forms, rounded forms, the patterned background, contours of surface, originality, pierced patterns and hardwood carving.
Further chapters are titled The Sketch-Book and Museums. The chapter on museums says that fragmentary exhibits foster false impressions and that environment is as important as handicraft. A list of plates includes a carved oak panel called The Sheepfold and a preliminary drawing of a lion for carving, from a drawing by Philip Webb.
