About this book

Ruth Lamb's Work, Wait, Win has a frontispiece captioned "My father was dead, and my patrimony was hopelessly gone." The contents begin with "Bad News" and "From Hall to Cottage" and include "Lint Hall Has a Tenant," "Miss Flint's Company Manners" and "A Skeleton in the Cupboard." In one scene a young man named Jack talks with a lawyer about lodgings, saying he could have a clean little bedroom at Jabez Harwood's for half-a-crown a week.

Jack describes how Jabez made his first kite, and how Betsy once looked after another lodger, doing his marketing and mending his clothes. In another scene Mrs. Burford talks with Rose about telling the truth, and a ring at the hall door interrupts Mr. Burford's quiet evening. A further passage has a woman called Cousin Dorothy laughing at thieves who were hard at work while her valuables lay within her reach.
