About this book
A silk top hat becomes a matter of household pride in John Hartley's sketches of Yorkshire life. Mally compares Sammywell's appearance with a neighbour's, then takes charge of a shopping expedition meant to improve his standing at chapel. Their exchanges set the tone for a collection built around domestic arguments, local manners and the sound of Yorkshire dialect. A smoky chimney brings a further contest over work and responsibility.
The collection also makes room for a different mood. In the factory story "True Blue," Susy, a young widow, supports herself by returning to the weaving shed where she worked before her marriage. Her circumstances place independence and grief alongside the comic scenes. Readers interested in regional speech will find much of the humour carried by pronunciation, misunderstandings and brisk conversation, while the everyday concerns give the sketches a recognisable human scale.
