Como e porque sou romancista faz{5} parte da collecção de trabalhos ineditos, mais ou menos incompletos, que mais tarde, sob o titulo geral de Obras Posthumas, hão de vir á luz da publicidade.

Todavia, sendo essa publicação muito morosa e difficil, entendi não dever por mais tempo conservar occultos aos leitores certos trabalhos, que naturalmente satisfazem a curiosidade publica. Assim, antecipo hoje o apparecimento desta autobiographia litteraria, em que sob a fórma de carta, José de Alencar expõe, singela e sinceramente, todas as circumstancias da sua vida, que, influindo-lhe no espirito, despertaram a sua extraordinaria e vigorosa vocação de escriptor, e principalmente de romancista.
