Ashok Mitra was an eminent Indian economist and Marxist born in 1928. He was known for his brilliant economic analysis and his advocacy for socialist policies. He was a professor of economics at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, and also served as the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India.

Ashok Mitra was a vocal critic of the capitalist economic system and believed in the importance of government intervention to ensure the equitable distribution of wealth and resources.
