Samantha Young
1986
On Dublin Street sold enormously after starting as self-published work, and it put a traumatised American in Edinburgh with a Scottish businessman and a great deal of arguing.
Young is Scottish, and the city is written as somewhere lived in rather than as a postcard, which is a large part of why the series travelled.
Young adult fantasy and historical fiction have followed under the same name, and moves between them more freely than most authors with a bestselling contemporary series are allowed to.
