Alicia McCalla
Alicia McCalla writes justice driven speculative fiction and brings experience as a retired school librarian, Marine Corps veteran, and diversity advocate. A Detroit native based in metropolitan Atlanta, she writes Black women as superheroes, vigilantes, and mythic figures confronting systems of power. Breaking Free, her 2012 debut, begins the Genetic Revolution series with XJ Patterson, a genetically enhanced teenager drawn into her family's resistance against an oppressive organization. McCalla's official biography places her work across urban fantasy, Afrofuturism, mythology, paranormal fiction, and superhero narratives. She also cofounded the State of Black Science Fiction community, combining writing with advocacy for diverse voices. Conference material presents her as a creator of multicultural speculative stories, while critical reading lists include Breaking Free among independent works expanding representation for Black girls. McCalla's catalogue connects fast moving plots with questions of justice, consequence, grief, and personal responsibility.
