Alina Bronsky
Alina Bronsky is a German novelist known for concise, energetic stories about strong minded characters negotiating family, migration, and social pressure. Baba Dunja’s Last Love was first published in German as Baba Dunjas letzte Liebe and reached English readers in Tim Mohr’s translation through Europa Editions. The novel follows an elderly woman who returns to her abandoned village near Chernobyl and builds an independent life with a small community of neighbors. Bronsky balances the damaged landscape with gardening, letters, companionship, humor, and Baba Dunja’s stubborn sense of order. The novel reached the 2015 German Book Prize longlist. Bronsky’s earlier novels include Broken Glass Park and The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine, both also translated by Mohr. Baba Dunja’s Last Love continues her interest in formidable older women while making home, age, and self determination central to a compact story about choosing where and how to live.
