Greg Baxter

Greg Baxter builds fiction from displacement, memory, and compressed time, examining how people interpret their own past. The Apartment, his first novel, follows an unnamed American veteran and former military contractor during a single winter day in an unnamed European city. With Saskia, a local acquaintance, he searches for a place to live while fragments of earlier experience surface through conversation and recollection. Penguin first published the novel in 2012, and the American Twelve edition followed with its own ISBN and pagination. His earlier memoir, A Preparation for Death, gives The Apartment a clear place between autobiographical prose and Baxter’s later novels. The book’s limited time frame and deliberately unspecified city keep attention on perception rather than conventional plot machinery. As a debut novel, it is a quiet study of expatriation and moral unease, and an early statement of Baxter’s interest in narrators who remain difficult even to themselves.
