Amin Maalouf is a Lebanese-born French novelist, essayist, journalist, and librettist whose writing considers memory, exile, identity, and cultural exchange. The Disoriented, translated into English by Frank Wynne, reunites former friends around a return to an unnamed Eastern Mediterranean homeland. Their altered loyalties allow Maalouf to examine how displacement reshapes both private recollection and once-shared ideals. His career began in international reporting before he turned primarily to books in the 1980s. He received the Prix Goncourt for The Rock of Tanios and the 2010 Prince of Asturias Award for Literature. Elected to the Académie française in 2011, he became its permanent secretary in 2023. Maalouf's bibliography ranges from historical novels and contemporary fiction to essays and opera texts. Across those forms, Mediterranean history is not decorative scenery. It serves as a meeting place for languages, inherited stories, political borders, and the difficult work of coexistence.
