Do Not Say We Have Nothing follows three musicians at the Shanghai Conservatory from the land reform campaigns through the Cultural Revolution to the square in 1989, and it took the Giller Prize and a Booker shortlisting in 2016. Dogs at the Perimeter is set against the Cambodian killing fields and a woman's search for the brother she lost in it. Thien's parents left Malaysia for Canada, where she grew up in Vancouver. She has written repeatedly about Chinese state censorship, and her books are not published there.
