Christopher Paul Curtis writes historical fiction for young people. His novels combine humor, precise settings, and closely observed family voices. The Mighty Miss Malone follows Deza Malone through the Great Depression as unemployment separates her family and leads her from Gary, Indiana, to a Hooverville outside Flint, Michigan. Published by Wendy Lamb Books and later Yearling, the novel also reconnects readers with a character first encountered in Bud, Not Buddy. Curtis grew up in Flint and worked on an automobile assembly line before becoming a full-time writer. Bud, Not Buddy received both the Newbery Medal and the Coretta Scott King Author Award, while The Watsons Go to Birmingham–1963 earned Newbery and Coretta Scott King honors.
