Amity Gaige was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1972, studied English and theatre at Brown, and took an MFA at the Iowa Writers' Workshop in 1999. She has taught at Mount Holyoke, Wesleyan and Amherst, and lectures in English at Yale. The National Book Foundation named her one of its 5 Under 35 in 2006, Schroder reached the Folio Prize shortlist in 2014, and a Guggenheim fellowship in fiction came in 2016. Sea Wife, her fourth novel, appeared in 2020 and was a New York Times Notable Book. Juliet and Michael Partlow leave suburban Connecticut with their two small children to spend a year at sea, and the book sets her account of the voyage against the log he kept as captain. A fifth novel, Heartwood, followed in 2025.
