Amy Rose Capetta writes imaginative fiction for young people, often using speculative forms to explore identity, community, and creative self-discovery. The Lost Coast follows Danny after she moves to Tempest, California, and encounters the Grays, a group of queer teenage witches among the redwoods. They believe their magic drew her across the country because she can help find Imogen, their missing friend. Shifting viewpoints, forest voices, and two timelines turn the search into a story about belonging as well as mystery. Candlewick released the novel in 2019, while current editions use the byline A. R. Capetta. Capetta earned an MFA in writing for children and young people from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Their other work includes Echo After Echo, The Heartbreak Bakery, and the Brilliant Death duology, alongside books coauthored with Cory McCarthy. In The Lost Coast, atmospheric fantasy and friendship are closely linked: Danny’s emerging sense of home depends on recognizing the distinct histories and strengths within the group rather than simply joining it.
