Andrew David MacDonald
When We Were Vikings, published in January 2020, is narrated by Zelda, a young woman with fetal alcohol syndrome who runs her life by a code drawn from Viking legend. It was Andrew David MacDonald's first novel, and it grew from a short story written in the voice of the character who became Zelda's brother Gert. He was raised in Edmonton, Alberta, took an MFA at Massachusetts Amherst, won a Western Magazine Award for Fiction, and has been selected for four volumes of The Journey Prize Stories, the yearly gathering of the best short fiction by emerging Canadian writers.
