Angie Abdou
Angie Abdou is a Canadian novelist, essayist, and creative-writing professor whose work often examines sport, bodies, family, and community. The Bone Cage, her first novel, follows elite swimmer Sadie and wrestler Digger as they train for the Olympic Games and confront the physical and emotional costs of competition. NeWest Press issued the novel in 2007, and it later became a Canada Reads finalist. Abdou's own account emphasizes the athletes' uncertainty about life after competition, while Arsenal Pulp Press describes a career that also includes fiction, memoir, criticism, and teaching. Her experience as a competitive swimmer gives the novel close attention to training routines, ambition, injury, and the difficult boundary between discipline and self-deception.
