Anna Bartlett Warner was a nineteenth-century American writer of fiction, hymns, and religious literature for children, often working with her sister Susan Warner. Karl Krinken belongs to their collaborative body of moral tales, using hardship, family duty, and Christian faith to shape protagonists. Little Nettie and The Carpenter’s Daughter are alternate edition-title presentations of the same narrative about Nettie Mathieson, whose optimism and devotion persist amid poverty, exhaustion, and her father's alcoholism. The Gold of Chickaree, published by G. P. Putnam's Sons in 1876 and by James Nisbet in 1877, broadens the sisters' shared work into a novel concerned with guardianship, social expectation, and moral judgment. Project Gutenberg and library records credit Susan and Anna together on these books, sometimes preserving expanded forms such as Karl Krinken, His Christmas Stocking and Little Nettie; or, Home Sunshine. Warner's place in these books is therefore best understood through collaboration, with the sisters joining domestic storytelling to the religious commitments that informed their songs and teaching.
