Annabel Pitcher writes young readers into morally difficult situations without losing the humor and texture of family life. An English Literature graduate of Oxford University and a former teacher, she followed her debut, My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece, with Ketchup Clouds. The novel takes the form of letters written by a teenager using the name Zoe to Stuart Harris, a prisoner under a death sentence in Texas. Through that private confession, Zoe recounts her involvement with two brothers, the betrayal that followed, and the death for which she feels responsible. Orion Children’s Books published the novel, and it received both the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and an Edgar Award in its young-reader category. Pitcher’s epistolary structure lets guilt unfold gradually while keeping the narrator’s sharp observations and ordinary household tensions in view. Ketchup Clouds therefore works at once as a suspense story, a first-love narrative, and a study of how telling the truth can become part of accepting responsibility.
