Annette Lyon
Annette Lyon develops historical and contemporary fiction through family relationships, regional history, and community life. Hazel of Heber Valley is the fifth entry in the multi-author Rocky Mountain Romances sequence and places Hazel Adams in nineteenth-century Utah. Her response to newcomer Wyatt Coltrane is complicated by Nathan, a childhood friend who distrusts him, so the novella turns on judgment, loyalty, and competing accounts of character. Blue Ginger Books published it in 2017. Lyon's wider bibliography includes novels, novellas, a cookbook, and a guide to grammar, as well as contributions to the collaborative Newport Ladies Book Club series. She has received a Whitney Award and multiple Utah Best of State medals for fiction. Hazel of Heber Valley reflects her established interest in Utah settings, using the neighboring communities of Heber Valley and Midway as more than labels. Local ties and long familiarity influence what Hazel believes, while the arrival of an outsider tests the reliability of those assumptions. Its form shows how friendship, caution, and desire can yield judgments from evidence.
