Arnold Henry Savage Landor

Arnold Henry Savage Landor was an English painter, photographer, writer, and wide-ranging traveler born in 1865. He turned observations from expeditions across Asia, Africa, and South America into illustrated travel narratives for a large reading public. In the Forbidden Land, issued by William Heinemann in 1898, recounts his journey in Tibet and originally carried an extensive subtitle describing its surveys, photographs, and encounters along the route. An Explorer’s Adventures in Tibet appeared through Harper & Brothers in 1910 as a shorter volume for a broad audience, revisiting the Tibetan expedition with maps and illustrations. Landor’s accounts combine geographic observation, portraiture, practical travel detail, and the dramatic self-presentation common to exploration writing of his period. Modern readers can value their documentary record while also recognizing the imperial assumptions and sensational framing that shaped British travel literature around 1900. The two titles are closely related records of the same expedition rather than wholly separate phases of his career.
