Edward Wilson Landor drew on legal and colonial experience in Western Australia for his best-known writing. The Bushman, fully titled The Bushman; or, Life in a New Country, was published in 1847 following his 1841 emigration with his brothers. Its chapters move between the sea journey, settlement, farming, exploration, natural history, colonial government, and everyday conditions near Perth and York. Memoir and commentary sit together, recording settler ambitions as well as the British assumptions used to describe expansion. Landor's later service as a magistrate supplied direct knowledge of the legal institutions discussed in the volume. Readers encounter geology, botany, public policy, and economic prospects alongside personal episodes. The book remains useful as a detailed primary account, but its judgments and vocabulary require critical reading. It preserves a participant's perspective on landscape, law, colonization, and relations between Indigenous people and settlers in nineteenth-century Western Australia.
