About this book
Two Persian kittens riding in a padded wooden box on a camel introduce the practical and personal sides of this overland travel account. Arnold Henry Savage Landor follows a route from Flushing to Calcutta, giving extensive attention to Persia. His chapter headings cover customs offices, Caspian steamers, roads, banking, schools and carpet production. Towns such as Teheran, Isfahan and Yezd appear alongside discussions of trade and foreign influence.
A meal in Persia brings the account down to the level of dishes, manners and hospitality. Landor describes rice, chicken, vegetables, fruit and sweets, followed by scented water for washing hands and a rest on silk divans. He also records a visit to Fatabad, with its enclosing wall, towers and domed rooms. Readers interested in historical travel writing can compare these everyday observations with the larger commercial concerns that occupy much of the contents.
