August Strindberg was a Swedish playwright, novelist, essayist, and painter whose experiments with realism, satire, psychology, and expressionism reshaped modern Scandinavian literature. The Red Room, first published in Swedish as Röda rummet in 1879, follows the aspiring writer Arvid Falk through Stockholm’s cultural, political, and commercial institutions. Its shifting social scenes made the novel an important early landmark of modern Swedish prose. By the Open Sea, originally I havsband from 1890, turns toward a more concentrated conflict between an ambitious fisheries inspector and the island community he has been sent to study. Ellie Schleussner translated both novels into English editions issued in the early twentieth century. Read together, the books reveal Strindberg’s movement from broad urban satire to an increasingly tense study of isolation, authority, and self-invention. His larger career also encompassed plays such as Miss Julie and The Father, autobiographical writing, historical drama, and visual art. These two novels show how readily he moved between public institutions and private obsession.
