About this book
The Road to Damascus is presented as a trilogy by August Strindberg, with an English version by Graham Rawson and an introduction by Gunnar Ollén. The introduction identifies the Stranger as an author and connects the character's wanderings from place to place with those of Strindberg himself. The stage directions describe a banquet with long tables laden with flowers, candelabra, birds in full plumage, lobsters, oysters, fruit and vegetables.
The banquet seating places clean everyday costumes at the third table and dirty, ragged figures of strange appearance at the fourth. The tables are arranged so that the Stranger cannot see the people sitting at the fourth table. The Confessor describes a foundation embracing the arts and sciences, with a library, museum, observatory and laboratory.
