Paul Heyse built a wide-ranging German literary career as a novelist, poet, translator, and dramatist, earning the 1910 Nobel Prize in Literature. Mary of Magdala is the English title of his five-act historical drama Maria von Magdala, a work that places its central figure amid the spiritual and civic tensions of the ancient setting. The play reached Broadway in 1902 with Mrs. Fiske in the leading role, produced and staged by Harrison Grey Fiske, and ran for over a hundred performances. That stage history demonstrates the drama’s international life beyond its original German publication. Heyse’s training in Romance philology and his extensive work with Italian literature informed a career unusually attentive to language, form, and cultural transmission.
