Bess Kalb grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and read political science at Brown. She wrote for Jimmy Kimmel Live! across eight years, shared an Emmy nomination for that work in 2013 and a Writers Guild of America Award in 2016, and has written for the Academy Awards and for the Emmy ceremony itself. She was head writer and co-executive producer of Yearly Departed, an Amazon comedy special that the Writers Guild nominated in its turn. Nobody Will Tell You This But Me, published by Knopf in March 2020, was her first book. It is told throughout in the voice of her grandmother, Bobby Bell, assembled out of saved voicemails and family stories, and it reaches back through four generations. The book reached the bestseller lists.
