An article on the earthquake and tsunami risk of the Cascadia subduction zone, "The Really Big One", won Kathryn Schulz the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. Raised in Shaker Heights, Ohio, she graduated in history from Brown in 1996, reported for The Santiago Times in Chile, moved to New York in 2001 and edited at the environmental magazine Grist before joining The New Yorker as a staff writer in 2015. Her first book, Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error (2010), makes the case that error is ordinary, useful and worth a certain fondness. Lost & Found: A Memoir, published in January 2022, sets two events against each other: the death of her father, who had reached America as a refugee, and her falling in love with Casey Cep, a fellow New Yorker staff writer whom she went on to marry. It grew from "Losing Streak", an essay later collected in The Best American Essays. The memoir won a Lambda Literary Award and made the longlist for that year's National Book Award. Schulz lives on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
