Kate McCann
1968
Madeleine McCann was three years old, days short of four, when she disappeared from an apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on the evening of 3 May 2007 while her parents were eating at a restaurant a short distance away. Kate McCann, a doctor who had worked in anaesthetics and then in general practice, wrote Madeleine four years afterwards and published it on 12 May 2011, the day of her daughter's eighth birthday. It covers the search, the Portuguese investigation that made both parents formal suspects in September 2007 and lifted that status in July 2008 when the file was shelved, and what the intervening years did to a family living under permanent scrutiny. Proceeds went to the fund set up to look for her. British police opened their own review soon afterwards, and Portuguese investigators declared a German man a formal suspect in 2022. The case has never closed.
