Beth Ann Bauman writes fiction about adolescence, family, friendship, and the complicated ways girls learn to see themselves. Beautiful Girls is her debut collection, published by MacAdam/Cage in 2003 with the fuller title Beautiful Girls: Stories. Its eight stories follow children, teenagers, and young women testing ideas about appearance, belonging, independence, and affection. Rather than treating beauty as a fixed advantage, Bauman shows how confidence, loneliness, family instability, and loyalty alter what her characters notice in themselves and one another. Her concise style often gives a young narrator’s immediate concern room to reveal a larger emotional problem. Bauman later turned to teenage novels, including Rosie and Skate and Jersey Angel, extending her interest in girls negotiating family pressures and coastal New Jersey communities. Beautiful Girls already contains the close attention to voice and flawed judgment that marks those later books.
