Fannie Belle Irving wrote American domestic fiction about girls and family life. Six Girls follows the Dering sisters, whose distinct personalities and ambitions shape a household facing financial worry, changing relationships, study, work, performance, courtship, illness, and bereavement. First published in the 1880s, the novel was illustrated by Frank T. Merrill and circulated through several later editions. Irving organizes the story around the sisters’ conversations and contrasting responses to responsibility, giving household events the movement of a broader coming-of-age narrative. A period government library list identified her as an American novelist and linked her to Washington Irving’s family. Her other credited fiction includes Hetty’s Strange History. Six Girls sits within nineteenth-century juvenile and family literature, but its long sequence of domestic decisions allows each sister a separate path rather than treating the group as one character. The book remains Irving’s most readily documented contribution to American girls’ fiction.
