Dorothy Edwards

Dorothy Edwards became best known as an English children’s writer who turned the everyday mischief of family life into warm, compact stories. My Naughty Little Sister grew from tales she created about her younger sister Phyllis, with a patient older narrator recalling scrapes, questions, and small domestic dramas. Methuen first published the book in 1952, and later editions paired Edwards’s storytelling with illustrations by Shirley Hughes. Rather than treating the child simply as badly behaved, Edwards makes curiosity and impulsiveness the source of both comedy and recognition. The result became the beginning of a much-loved sequence whose nursery, garden, birthday, and family settings remain close to a young reader’s experience.
