A Good House, her first novel, follows the Chambers family in Stonebrook, Ontario, from the postwar year of 1949 to 1997. The story moves among Bill, his children Patrick, Daphne, and Paul, and the relatives and partners who gradually reshape their household. Its changing houses give physical form to nearly five decades of marriages, illnesses, work, secrets, and accommodation. The 1999 HarperFlamingoCanada edition began the book's publication history, and Henry Holt later brought it to American readers. The novel won the 1999 Giller Prize and established Burnard, already respected for the story collections Women of Influence and Casino & Other Stories, as a novelist. Macmillan places it within literary fiction. Burnard treats domestic stability as something continually made rather than simply inherited, allowing small gestures and private loyalties to reveal how one Canadian family survives both loss and change.
