Brad Felver
Brad Felver is an American short-story writer whose fiction studies grief, deprivation, family strain, and the moral pressure of difficult places. The Dogs of Detroit, his debut collection, won the Drue Heinz Literature Prize and appeared from University of Pittsburgh Press in 2018. Individual stories from the collection also earned O. Henry recognition. Colorado Review describes the volume as fourteen dark, varied stories populated by people whose choices are shaped by poverty, loss, and damaged relationships. The title story follows a son and father in a depleted urban landscape, while other pieces move through different Midwestern and American settings. Felver varies voice and viewpoint without reducing the collection to a single type of character. The Dogs of Detroit introduces Brad Felver as a writer interested in the moment when endurance becomes morally complicated, finding flashes of loyalty and human connection within stories that refuse easy consolation.
