Charles G. D. Roberts was a Canadian poet and prose writer especially associated with fiction about wild animals. Some Animal Stories gathers tales centered on creatures including panthers, ravens, porcupines, skunks, and a she-bear, presenting instinct and survival through closely observed narrative scenes. The Watchers of the Trails, first published in 1904 as a book of animal life, similarly follows woodland, marsh, and field creatures across a sequence of fictional episodes. In its prefatory note, Roberts explains that the stories combine invention with facts assembled through patient observation of animal behavior. Charles Livingston Bull supplied the many illustrations for the early edition, linking Roberts's natural-history detail with a strong visual record of the wilderness. Together, the two collections show how Roberts turned field knowledge into accessible animal storytelling while keeping the creatures, rather than human observers, at the center.
