Bragi Ólafsson
Bragi Ólafsson brings dry humour and carefully observed social discomfort to Icelandic novels, poetry, plays, and music. The Ambassador follows Sturla Jón Jónsson, a poet who travels from Iceland to Lithuania for a literary festival while carrying a newly purchased overcoat and an uneasy mixture of ambition, insecurity, and self-deception. Small encounters and misunderstandings gradually expose the distance between the role he hopes to perform and the person others see. The novel was translated into English by Lytton Smith and published by Open Letter Books, bringing Ólafsson's comic treatment of literary culture to a wider readership. Before establishing himself as a writer, Ólafsson played bass with the Icelandic band the Sugarcubes, and his later work has ranged across poetry, theatre, and prose. The Ambassador reflects that broad artistic background through its attention to performance, rhythm, and the awkward rituals surrounding authors, translators, and international cultural events.
