Diego Marani is an Italian novelist, translator, and specialist in multilingualism whose fiction tests the relationship between language and identity. The Interpreter follows an international official whose colleague begins producing speech that belongs to no known language and then disappears. As the disturbance spreads, a professional problem becomes an investigation across European places, institutions, and competing explanations of communication. Judith Landry translated the novel into English for Dedalus. It forms a thematic trilogy with New Finnish Grammar and The Last of the Vostyachs, books likewise concerned with memory, vocabulary, and cultural belonging. Marani worked for European institutions in translation and cultural policy, experience that gives his invented bureaucracies a recognisable foundation. He also created Europanto, a playful hybrid assembled from several European languages, and used it in newspaper columns and stories. His fiction turns linguistic confusion into narrative action, asking what remains of identity when familiar words no longer provide stable meaning.
