Brian Olsen writes speculative fiction that mixes science fiction, fantasy, paranormal elements, and comedy with characters whose identities matter to the story. The Dystopia Spell opens his Multiverse Mashup sequence and follows Crossroads operative Jed Ryland when two incompatible fictional worlds begin occupying the same reality. One resembles a televised competition built around teenage rivals, while the other brings magical creatures and a powerful sorcerer into the conflict. Olsen uses that collision to examine genre conventions from inside the adventure, allowing Jed to recognize patterns that the inhabitants cannot see. The series continues with Night of the Living Date, which carries the same agent into another unstable narrative world. Olsen is also a playwright, director, and producer with an MFA from the Actors Studio Drama School, experience that informs his interest in dialogue and performance. The Dystopia Spell therefore works both as a fast speculative quest and as a playful study of how familiar story rules shape expectations.
